"Glorifié (et Exalté) soit Celui (Allah) qui a emmené Son esclave (Muhammad salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) pour un voyage de nuit depuis Al-Masjid-al-Haram jusqu'à la mosquée la plus éloignée (de Jérusalem), le quartier de laquelle Nous avons béni, afin que Nous puissions lui montrer (Muhammad Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) notre Ayat. Le voyage nocturne et l'ascension "sont deux incidents parmi les plus grands incidents de la noble histoire de Mahomet (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam)." Cependant, le mode de ces incidents a été débattu au fil des années : se sont-ils produits dans un rêve ? Son âme (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) a-t-elle été enlevée et emmenée au ciel alors que son corps est resté sur terre ? Ou est-il monté dans toute sa forme (corps et âme) ?

Shaykh Ahmad Shakir met ce problème de côté avec une révision approfondie et une explication des hadiths qui ont été transmis concernant al-Isra wa-al-Mi'raj ; les différentes transmissions et les erreurs qu'elles contiennent ; et une réfutation de ceux qui considèrent ces phénomènes miraculeux comme non scientifiques et donc faux.
