Abu Bakar’s Great Deed - Usamah’s Military Expedition - Lessons and Parables
Sold OutThe Prophet ﷺ chose Usamah bin Zayd bin Haritha (RA) who was only 18/19 years old at the time as the commander of the expedition to Syria.
Usamah's (RA) leadership was initially rejected by some because of his young age at the time, however the Prophet ﷺ dismissed these concerns. He (S) then ordered all his companions, with the exception of Ali and other members of Banu Hashim, to report for duty to Usama, and to serve under him.
These companions included the eldest, the richest and the most powerful men of Quraysh such as Abu Bakr, Umar, Abdur Rahman bin Auf, Abu Obaida ibn al-Jarrah, Sa'ad bin Abi Waqqas, Talha, Zubayr, Khalid bin al-Walid, and many others (RA).
The Prophet ﷺ fell ill when Usamah's (RA) army was encamped at Jorf, just a few miles from Madinah on the road to Syria.
On account of the serious illness of the Prophet ﷺ, Usamah (RA) delayed his departure.
When the Prophet ﷺ died, Usamah (RA) returned to Madina and sought further orders.
On being appointed the Khalif this was the first issue that Abu Bakr (RA) had to make a decision on should Usamah (RA) proceed to its destination, or should it be abandoned because of the change in circumstances.
